Evening primrose oil is a very important nutrient, and γ-linolenic acid (GLA) is a natural source of omega-6 fatty acids. Fatty acids are an important part of all fats. Linoleic acid is found in common vegetable oils and omega-6, such as corn oil, canola oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil, peanut oil, sesame oil and olive oil. Many North Americans have difficulty converting linoleic acid to GLA because their bodies lack sufficient vitamins B6, B3, magnesium and zinc. In addition, trans fatty acids and saturated fats in food prevent the conversion of linoleic acid GLA.

Gamma linoleic acid (GLA) in evening primrose oil is an essential fatty acid, which cannot be produced by the human body. It must be ingested from food.
